An Evaluation of Meta-Analyses in Education: The Extent of Heterogeneity in Meta-Analysis

Thu, April 8, 1:00 to 2:00pm EDT (1:00 to 2:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Meta-analyses are generally used to assess the overall effect of a treatment or intervention. In this study, a total of 61 meta-analyses published after 2008 were identified, aims to evaluate the current meta-analytic practices in education. Based on the information reported in methodologies, analysis and results, components that contribute to the extent of heterogeneity in a meta-analysis were summarized and evaluated, the result reveals that these meta-analyses reported well in study characteristics, but lack of full and transparent information in methodologies and heterogeneity variance estimation. Recommendations about reporting in meta-analysis are provided for producing more credible and generalizable inferences.
