Abstract

In political times of “America First,” Mexican border walls, and Muslim travel bans, today’s American climate is rife with negative rhetoric about immigrants, the violence they commit on American soil, and the vocalized cries for immigrants to “go back home.” Their status in the U.S. is often discussed in binary terms as “legal” and/or “illegal,” with little regard for the ways many are invited to fill the void in the professional workforce or, in the case of education, called to alleviate the country’s most pressing problems in American public schools. Although international professionals have always played a role in U.S. public schools, the sharp increase of teachers through current recruitment efforts have called researchers to reexamine this trend.
