The goal of Project STEMulate, a National Science Foundation ITEST study (DRL#1657625), was to develop and implement a program that fosters success in STEM for underserved and underrepresented students. This study explored the influence of Problem-based learning (PBL) on high school students, and was implemented at three sites of the Department of Education Upward Bound Program in Hawaiˋi, and engaged students by challenging them in solving hands-on, real-world problems in their communities. As predicted, PBL facilitated greater engagement for the students, provided a richer and transformative learning experience, and positively affected students' interest in STEM. Analysis of the results identified science self-efficacy along with STEM careers knowledge as significant factors for high school students pursuing STEM careers.
