Creating More Critical Conversations About Mathematics

Abstract

For better or worse, teachers are not the only ones delivering messages about mathematics; social media has become a powerful complement. Popular media outlets are full of ideas about mathematics and as people negotiate their way through the world, it is important that we, as a mathematics education community, analyze, decipher, and scrutinize those messages. This project concentrates on providing students with windows, mirrors, and sliding doors as an opportunity for students to invite their authentic uncensored thoughts, curiosities, and uncertainties into the classroom.
