Many studies show the importance of advanced math and science courses in supporting learning and postsecondary success. Given the limited curricula in some remote locations, can rural schools offer these courses? This study examines national data about course offerings in rural and non-rural schools and in rural schools serving higher than average proportions of students of color and students from low-income families. Overall, rural schools were sometimes at an advantage and sometimes at a disadvantage for offering these courses. Closer examination of rural schools revealed that those serving higher than average proportions of students of color and those serving higher than average proportions of students from low-income families were less likely to offer advanced math and science.
