Abstract

The primary grades are a crucial period for literacy learning. For most U.S. children, literacy instruction in 2020-2021 looked very different from what it looked like before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, beyond online versus in person, how have teachers adapted literacy instruction during distance learning? In this study we address this question for all students with a focus on Els and SWDs. We found there was less literacy instruction in particular with writing for an audience, discussing texts that are read aloud, spelling single printed words, and word identification. There were also benefits including websites/apps that support literacy, differentiation of student instruction, and adapted literacy strategies that should be leveraged to help support future instruction for all students.
