Abstract

The current study identified and confirmed factors that contribute to second or foreign language anxiety based on 49 studies conducted between 1986 and 2020. Results revealed that current language proficiency, learning experience, and psychological factors including self-efficacy, self-confidence, and motivation were crucial factors that influence language anxiety. Further, language performance and language anxiety were negatively correlated with specific language skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking). Teaching strategies for avoiding language anxiety were provided under each skill. To our best knowledge, this is the only systematic review that investigates factors that impact language anxiety in second language acquisition.
