Back to the Future: An Invitation to a (Re)Imagined Methodological Space

Fri, April 22, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Recent debates around methods and methodologies have led to questions about what methodologists are and whether they are needed. In this paper, we take up this discussion by drawing on the movie Back to the Future to imagine a new methodological space in which researchers work together across methodological differences. In particular, we prompt authors and readers to consider when and why, if at all, labels are needed to indicate who can and who cannot conduct research, and we argue that the role of the researcher can be multiplicitous and need not be bound by a professional role. Finally, we envision a future of change supported by methodologies that disrupt imbalances and support equity and justice.
