Using Mixed-Methods Approaches to Design Educational Interventions: A Heuristic Example

Thu, April 21, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Mixed Methods Research Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

Our methodological paper demonstrates how to conduct a mixed methods needs analysis to improve the design of educational interventions. We illustrate the techniques of a mixed method needs analysis by using our own intervention study—aimed at improving students’ ability to evaluate the credibility of online information—as a heuristic example. Our paper offers two significant findings: a novel approach to improving the design of educational interventions, and, an analysis of a range of factors important to the design of an educational intervention. These findings can contribute to the cultivation of equitable education systems for the 21st century.
