This study is a systematic review of literature on ECEs’ knowledge and experiences as mandated reporters of child maltreatment, with focus on studies conducted in the United States. The purpose of the study is to illuminate consensus on where training needs and challenges lie in the early childhood field. The study builds on authors’ community-based needs assessment research on mandated reporter training (authors et al, 2020), which involved over 700 survey respondents and 41 mandated reporter interviews. We illuminate the dire need for additional research to better understand and implement evidence-based mandated reporter training for ECEs, and to address gaps in their knowledge of when and how to report, and the support they may need to alleviate emotional burdens.
