Freedom of speech enjoys an elevated and foundational position in American thought, as well as in the academy. Yet, it has often been depicted as an ideal in constant tension with efforts to make higher education more inclusive, diverse, and safe. This study assesses that claim and finds that students tend not to perceive the two in opposition, and thus proposes that a more thorough framework would understand them as complimentary to student success in an increasingly complex and multicultural world.
