Cultivating Equitable and Racially Just Teaching and Learning: An Imperative in Brazilian Public Schools

Fri, April 22, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Floor: Upper Level, Room 11B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Rejecting majoritarian stories and crisis narratives that pathologize Black Brazilian students, in this interactive symposium, through empirical counter-stories, Brazilian education researchers offer glimpses of the ingenuity of Brazilian public school students. Problematizing equating the absence of state-sanctioned barriers to access as an indicator of the absence of discrimination, they invite us to (re)consider racial exclusion in Brazilian public schools. Shedding light onto other settings where de facto racial segregation also characterizes schools and schooling, this interactive symposium will consist of: a gallery-walk portraying racism in Brazilian public education; spark talks featuring Black teachers, students, and community members; and a Freirean culture circle with the aims of problematizing racism in schooling across geographic borders, and moving toward just educational futures.
