Session Type: Symposium
The papers are each focused on an arts-based, Indigenous girl-led projects in different Canadian regions, including an out-door mural, a community garden and a Facebook activity. The panel addresses the notion of public pedagogy which seeks to intervene into the production of meaning in public spaces (Chappell 2010; Sandlin and Burdak 2011). Echoing Giroux’s (2004, 68) argument for a pedagogy of public memory as a form of public pedagogy, the papers draw on the idea that public memory is not an object of reverence but is instead an ongoing subject of debate, dialogue, and critical engagement. The panel examines relations of power, privilege and subordination to make connections that are often hidden, forgotten, or wilfully ignored.
