Session Type: Symposium
Persisters or persisting students are those who do not complete high school in four years--rather, they persist into and through four, five, or six years of school before earning a diploma, leaving to seek an alternative credential, or eventually dropping out. The papers in this symposium describe persisting students in various contexts, take stock of the schools they attend, and assess their outcomes—especially in relation to their classmates who graduate on time or permanently drop out. In doing so, this session seeks to improve our understanding of this vulnerable group of students, and help researchers and educators promote more favorable outcomes for them—in high school and beyond.
