Improvement science (IS) has recently been promoted as a potentially transformative approach to help educational systems accelerate improvement to reach its lofty, often elusive, goals. In this panel, we explore four case studies of how IS is integrated into K-12 educational leadership to lead school and district improvement. These case studies explore various organizational conditions that enable efforts to integrate IS into school improvement efforts. We inhabit the vantage point of four unique approaches to IS supported by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s iLEAD initiative to elucidate how IS complements and/or conflicts with organizational routines, procedures, priorities, and goals. These case studies will suggest how to maximize the utilization of IS to accelerate school improvement.
