Communities-of-Color-Based Research for Racially Just Transformation in a State's Public Education System

Sun, April 24, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Marriott Grand Ballroom 13

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium explores the power and potential of communities-of-color driven research to prompt change toward educational justice in organizations and systems. At the behest of a state educator’s association, educational researchers and community partners collaborated with families, communities and educators invested in racial equity to create a bold, direction-setting “roadmap” for reducing barriers of institutional racism in a state’s P-12 education system. This multifaceted team engaged with communities of color, including students, families, teachers and administrators of color and their networks, Indigenous communities, and others through a variety of research strategies. These collective studies communicate a unified set of principles and practices needed to address and eliminate systemic educational inequities from the perspectives of those who have been historically underserved.
