Critical Contexts for Adolescents: Exploring Contextual Influences on Sexting Behaviors and on the Experiences of Gender-Expansive Adolescents

Sun, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Rancho Santa Fe 3

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium will include three studies focused on ways in which contexts at multiple levels of the social ecology influence adolescents’ experiences and well-being. The first talk will explore how school-based social networks influence adolescents’ engagement in non-consensual sexting. The second talk will examine how rural, suburban, and urban contexts differentially affect transgender and other gender expansive adolescents’ likelihood of victimization exposures and well-being. The third talk will present findings from a longitudinal study, emphasizing how individual and contextual factors relate to psychosocial functioning among transgender and non-binary adolescents. The Chair will facilitate a dialogue among presenters and session attendees, and guide a discussion about how findings collectively inform how to better support adolescents’ well-being across key social ecological contexts.
