Sociocultural Perspectives on Teaching Science and Engineering in Bilingual and Dual-Language Programs: Professional Development Issues

Sun, April 24, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 3rd Level, Harbor Tower, Mission Beach AB

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Bilingual and Dual-language (BDL) teachers have unique needs in teaching science and engineering (S&E). However, the professional learning opportunities they are engaged with does not always acknowledge their unique needs or provide tools and resources specifically created for them. We seek to counter deficit assumptions that center English proficiency as a prerequisite to engage in S&E learning or that view language development as independent from content learning. Through our interdisciplinary collaborations, our objective is to discuss sociocultural perspectives in professional development of BDL teachers for S&E learning in culturally sustaining and socially just ways. We include research projects that will demonstrate ways that BDL teachers can be engaged in professional learning experiences to improve the educational opportunities of BDL students.
