Session Type: Roundtable Session
This session features three research papers about the experiences of work-based learning (WBL) in advanced technology fields from the student, college, and industry perspectives. WBL is broadly defined to include internships, apprenticeships, as well as cooperative, service, and experiential learning. The Symposia papers analyze college-based case studies, interviews with students and industry personnel, a national survey about students’ knowledge and utilization of internship opportunities, and a statewide dataset related to workforce outcomes. Findings focus on WBL and student experiences, institutional supports, employer needs, as well as related curriculum and instruction. The Symposia will conclude with discussion of implications of the research for school-to-work pathways in advanced technology programs, recommendations for implementation of WBL programs, and the development of competency-based education.
