Session Type: Symposium
This session will bring together dual language (DL) scholars representing a variety of methodological paradigms to discuss qualitative and quantitative approaches to defining and operationalizing sociocultural competence, the elusive third goal of DL education. Responding to calls in the field for more work in this area (Authors, 2014), the session presents a series of empirical papers that explore different ways to define and operationalize SCC through teacher interview data, language portrait silhouettes (Dressler, 2014), social network analysis (Borgatti, et al. 2002), professional learning communities and self-assessment rubrics to promote reflection on classroom practice, and a teacher-level measure using the Rasch/Guttman Scenario Scale (Author, 2020). In the context of DL education, cultivating equitable education systems requires careful attention to SCC.
