Session Type: Symposium
This session presents evidence of how education policy and the current political backlash against “critical race theory” inhibit antiracist praxis within schools and districts. Based upon interviews with educators who participated in a four-day antiracist professional development institute and returned to their schools and communities to forge reform, this symposium demonstrates both the power of antiracist professional development and the barriers educators face when implementing evidence-based strategies for teaching, learning and leading for racial justice. These papers offer both specific policy recommendations and hope that antiracist professional development can embolden educators of color to advocate for more culturally responsive schools while instilling confidence in white educators to better connect with and support their students of color.
