Cultivating Equitable and Racially Just Teaching in Brazilian Public Schools Amid COVID-19, Racism, and Entangled Pandemics

Abstract

Often heralded as a “racial democracy," Brazil is marked by ingrained racism. Brazil’s educational system is deeply segregated. Deficit views of Black Brazilian students and communities and “majoritarian” stories of Brazilian public schooling uphold a legacy of racism. In this interactive symposium, Brazilian researchers use empirical counter stories to contest majoritarian stories and center the ingenuity of Brazilian public school students. The symposium includes: an introduction to mounting pandemics and their effects on Brazilian public schools; a digital gallery walk portraying racism in Brazilian public education; spark talks featuring the voices of Brazilian teachers, teacher educators, students, and community members; and a Discussant-facilitated Freirean culture circle that problematizes racism in schooling across geographic borders and moves toward just educational futures.
