In this symposium research on special programs for gifted students is discussed. There is a lively debate among researchers, educational practitioners, and policymakers about the effectiveness of such programs. It is not always possible to assess effects in a scientifically sound manner, giving rise to doubt about whether the programs should be offered or whether the right students are targeted.
In this symposium two papers are presented that provide evidence on the effectiveness of special programs for gifted students. Studies originate from different countries, allowing for a discussion of differential contexts. In addition, next to scientific discussants, educational experts on gifted educational practice are invited to share their thoughts on the evidence that is presented.
