Abstract

Throughout the data use and dashboard literature, there are increasing recommendations on how teachers leverage data systems for instructional improvement. Yet, recent large-scale clickstream research finds little evidence of robust effects of educator dashboard use on student achievement. One reason may be that educators are rarely included in collaborative data visualization design with data scientists and dashboard designers. This paper details an NSF funded Researcher-Practitioner Partnership (RPP) between university researchers and the central data provider for 56 school districts in New York in which we brought together educators with data scientists in a two-day co-design workshop to collaboratively build visualizations that address the needs of teachers using data structures from the districts’ Instructional Data Warehouse (IDW).
