This paper describes elementary school children’s abilities to compose information reports, a genre of science writing that provides facts and descriptions of a topic. To do this we present data from the first year and one genre of a multi-year, multi-genre study of children’s writing for many purposes. Findings include descriptive statistics of the genres children produced at the beginning, middle and end of the year in two different schools. Children’s productions provide insight into how genre knowledge and writing develops across the elementary grades for this particular science genre in terms of linguistic features and organization.
