Sun, April 24, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

There is a growing need for well-prepared faculty educators and program leadership as health professions experience dramatic demand and growth. The workforce problem facing health professional schools presents an opportunity, or perhaps imperative, for continuing professional development in health professions education (HPE). A literature and web search identified 18 HPE doctoral programs in the United States and Canada, with 11 of these programs having been established between 2014 and 2021. While the programs have many similarities, there are some notable differences with respect to the admission requirements, duration, delivery format, curriculum, and graduation requirements. Issues remain regarding standardizing the degree requirements, title, and further developing core competencies that guide the knowledge and skills HPE graduates are expected to have.
