Abstract

In this study, we sought to develop a framework to provide educators with training and resources to effectively support and guide social-emotional learning (SEL) in online environments, which we refer to as o-SEL. We utilized nationally recognized standards and competencies related to SEL, trauma-informed schools, social justice, and technology education to guide the development our six online modules for educators to gain effective skills, knowledge, and resources to teach SEL in online environments. Survey and focus group data were also collected. We identified six elements for educators to foster inclusive and effective o-SEL environments to PK-12 learners. We summarize these elements through six action verbs (i.e., Empower, Engage, Motivate, Include, Collaborate, and Extend) and describe the modules in this paper.
