As innovative K-12 civics curricula emerge in response to democratic discord and state legislation, it is essential to measure alignment between curricular aspirations and realities. Specifically, do curricula actually provide the space and supports to achieve Deeper Civic Learning? This paper discusses the development of a novel curriculum mapping tool calibrated to the seven elements of Deeper Civic Learning and Project-Based Learning design principles, demonstrates the utility of the tool to inform redesign of a year-long 8th grade civics curriculum, and discusses broader implications for preparing students for authentic and informed civic engagement.
