By comparing 323 students (53.3% international) in the United States, this longitudinal quantitative study explored international students’ experiences with physical activities, health-related behaviors, and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. International students reported experiencing more mental distress, spending less time on exercise, perceiving that they were less physically healthy, engaging less with smoking and drinking, and devoting less time to sleep compared to domestic peers. We also found that both international and domestic students perceived that they became more mentally and physically healthy, spent more time on exercise and sleep, and drank and smoked less during 2021 compared to 2020. Lastly, international students’ mental health and physical activities were causally and reciprocally associated over a one-year interval.
