The Design of Collaborative Activities Across Disciplines to Promote Student Learning and Agency

Mon, April 25, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Division Virtual Rooms, Division C - Section 3a: Learning Environments Virtual Paper Session Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Collaborative learning has been used in various ways across disciplines, and collaboration is a key 21st-century skill to solve complex problems. In collaborative environments, students are challenged cognitively, socially, and emotionally as they not only share ideas, but also incorporate diverse perspectives while reflecting on their own understanding. Good team work provides opportunities for students to take their agency of sharing and negotiating alternative ideas, and accept responsibility among group members. This session will introduce five collaborative activities across different domains, including ELA, mathematics, and science, and explore student interaction patterns in these collaborative activities. Our discussions will focus on how to structure activities to promote quality collaboration among students as well as student learning and agency.
