Session Type: Symposium
The connection between reading and writing is well-established. Yet, reading and writing abilities develop and interrelate in complex ways. Capturing the development of reading and writing abilities and their connection requires consideration of learners’ characteristics and experiences. Additionally, reports indicate that reading-writing connection results differ as a result of how reading and writing are measured. Further complexity is found when investigating the reading and writing connection of bilinguals, as the development of reading and writing abilities, and their connection must be considered across languages. This symposium will discuss the emerging research that leverages component literacy skills, motivation, assessment differences, and cross-language approaches to understanding the mechanisms that underlie the reading-writing connection.
