The Emotional Turn in Doctoral Education

Mon, April 25, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), International Affiliated Groups Virtual Rooms, Australian Association for Research in Education - AARE Virtual Paper Session Room

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Theoretical engagement with emotions has been high on the agenda of higher education in general, and in doctoral education in particular, for the last two decades. The growing negative impact of the current pandemic on doctoral candidates’ mental health and well- being is being recognized, and it seems timely to stay engaged with the topic by exploring new theoretical angles and less studied contexts. This symposium makes a conceptual and empirical contribution to the area of doctoral learning with its focus on the key concepts of psychological safety and self-theory, failure, and epistemic awareness.
