Personal, Work, and Client-Related Burnout: A Statewide Study of Principals

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore P-12 school principal burnout. P-12 principals (N = 154) completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) which addresses three constructs: 1.) personal burnout, 2.) work-related burnout, and 3.) client-related burnout. The researchers found the participants reported they do experience burnout, especially in respect to the CBI work-related items followed by personal burnout, client-related administrators/teachers, client-related students/parents, and client-related school board/superintendent. Items within item subsets correlated had positive and moderate to high correlations. Correlations between item subsets ranged from .37 to .78. Correlations between item sets and professional and district characteristics had significant negative correlations in five pairings.
