The Effects of a Telehealth Training Program for Parents Having Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in China (Poster 18)

Abstract

The current study is the first randomized controlled trial to evaluate whether a self-directed telehealth parent training program would (1) improve parent knowledge, skills, stress and self-efficacy, (2) increase child social communication skills, and (3) be acceptable to parents in the mainland China context. A total of 66 parents of children with newly diagnosed ASD aged between 1 and 6 years were randomly assigned to either the intervention or the control group. Compared to the control group, families in the intervention group gained significantly greater improvements in both parent and child outcomes domains at post-intervention, suggesting that this program may be a promising and accessible approach to empowering families after their children’s diagnosis of ASD in the Chinese societies.
