Fuerza en la solidaridad: Co-Creation of Critical Affinity Groups With Pre/In-Service Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Teachers Resisting in White Spaces

Abstract

This paper is based on the ongoing design and implementation of two critical teacher affinity groups intended to build community, solidarity, and agency among pre-service and in-service BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) teachers studying and/or working in white-normative educational spaces in the Midwest. Researchers explore the design concepts and processes involved in support of both initiatives as well as the utility of such collaborative and strategic efforts thus far. They also consider the ways in which these affinity groups sustain (to varying degrees) their authenticity, criticality, and anti-colonial orientations and what social, economic and geographic factors have served as barriers and accelerants to meaningful engagement and growth.
