Race, Sexuality, and Gender at the Intersection of School Pushout: A Case Study of Esperanza

Abstract

Although there is a growing body of work on the experiences of girls who are pushed out of school, still little is known about the experiences of Latina students. Accordingly, even less is known about self-identified queer, undocumented Latina students. Esperanza’s case study carefully details how she was pushed out of school. Using a Critical Race Feminista Praxis, this case study shows how Esperanza’s intersectional identities criminalized her everyday and eventually pushed her out of school. I argue the process of school pushout manifested in social control, school discipline, and interpersonal gender violence. Implications for this case study urge future research to use new theories with new theorizing methods to (re)examine the ways school pushout manifests for Latina students.
