A Meta-Synthesis of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Scholarship Related to Literacies, Communities, and Families

• In Event: Addressing Equity in Education Research: What Can We Learn From Research Syntheses?

Abstract

This presentation focuses on meta-synthesis as a means to synthesize qualitative literacy research to support the cultivation of equitable educational practices for the 21st century. We describe our process for conducting a metasynthesis of scholarly literature related to literacies, communities, and families that highlights the voices, perspectives and findings of scholars from BIPOC (Bilingual and/or Indigenous and/or People of Color) communities. Specifically, we examine limitations of our past attempts as qualitative synthesists and share the methods we have used to highlight BIPOC scholarship. We explore possibilities for designing qualitative metasyntheses that yield important insights into scholarly findings that can inform the creation of equitable educational spaces.
