Abstract

A large body of research suggests that stereotype-based gender bias may operate in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) peer review process. Our previous work examined this gender bias using a sample of R01 application critiques from R01 PIs at a single institution. This study re-examined this gender bias using a national sample collected from R01 awardees who received grants between 2010 to 2015 across the US. We analyzed R01 application priority and criteria scores, and word categories in critiques to examine the use of different evaluative standards for male and female PIs, particularly for R01 renewals (Type 2). Findings confirm the possibility of ongoing gender bias in the NIH R01 review process, but in subtle ways.
