The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of text complexity levels and text types used for whole-class teacher-supported reading instruction in four core reading programs in grades three, four, and five. Using a two-way ANOVA, we found that the mean Lexile level of the texts of three of the four curricula were significantly different from one another and below the CCSS expectations. Additionally, there was a wide range of Lexile levels and distribution of genres within each program and across the four programs. Further, the data do not follow the Common Core’s recommendations about distribution of text genre.
