"Don't Rock the Boat": A Mixed-Methods Study of How Education Programs Design for Equity

Abstract

Teacher education programs (TEP) have received a great deal of criticism, calling for more oversight and accountability to ensure that programs are preparing "high-quality" teachers. While much debate centers around the best way to measure program quality, there is little consensus on which aspects of TEPs matter. As our nation racially reckons with the physical and spiritual murdering of people of color, an essential aspect is the centering of equity. Because TEPs structurally promote whiteness, programs continue to struggle to prepare culturally responsive, equity-minded candidates. Employing a convergent mixed method case study design, this study aims to understand how TEPs are designed to foster candidates' equity dispositions.
