Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in Evaluation: Saving Resources by Repurposing Existing Data to Address Evaluation Questions

Abstract

In program evaluation, time and energy of the program leaders and participants are often at a premium. Finding ways to reduce the burden on participants while also working to include multiple sources of evidence to answer evaluation questions is a key task of evaluators. The authors served as evaluators of a HRSA training grant for a resident training program at a College of Medicine. The authors built grant-related scales from existing data for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) milestones. This work illustrates a novel way to reuse and recycle existing data by utilizing good practices of survey development and data analysis techniques.
