Ke Ala o ka Noʻeau

• In Event: Cultivating Equitable Education Systems: Reaffirming the Roles of Indigenous Politics, Pedagogy, and Praxis

Abstract

This paper will present examples from Noʻeau’s books that illustrate some of the common calques made by English speaking learners of Hawaiian. We imagine that this problem is found in many language learning situation, particularly when second language learners are interacting and validating each other’s calques. This paper is not about validating condescension. It is meant, instead, to promote an unwavering desire to improve, particularly under adverse circumstances. We should adhere to the adage that the more you know, the more you know you don’t know.
