Ethical Issues in the Use of Artificial Intelligence Applied to Natural Language Processing of Indigenous Language Use

Abstract

Whether we like it or not Artificial Intelligence (AI) is part and parcel of the everyday lives of indigenous peoples. AI is defined as comprising the advanced digital technologies that enable machines to reproduce or surpass abilities that would require intelligence if humans were to perform them. This paper is based on a project which will provide useful tools developed at the interface between Māori Knowledge and computer technology. The area of ethics and AI as applied to indigenous knowledge is a burgeoning area. This paper will document the development of ethics associated with the AI project related to Maori language and how these questions were considered in the process through consultation with Maori language specialists and cultural experts.
