How to Dismantle Structural Racism in STEM Higher Education

Abstract

Structural racism in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) higher
education refers to the embedded systems that promote and defend white supremacy in
scientific-related fields. Structural racism denotes a network of relations – social,
political, economic, and ideological – that shape the opportunities of individuals and
groups identified with various races. These structures are responsible for producing
and perpetuating racial advantages for the dominant racial group and disadvantages
for the subordinated races (Bonilla-Silva 2015).
