At the Crossroads: Enacting Anticolonial Responsibility in Social Studies Scholarship Through Community-Centered Participatory Research

Sat, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 2nd Level, Seaport Tower, Seaport Ballroom A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Social studies educational research, and educational research more broadly, faces a methodological crossroads. In addition to neglecting increasing calls for scholars to close the research/theory and practice gap, settler colonial academic structures inhibit innovation and transformation and continue patterns of colonizing research. This symposium critically examines the conventional and predominant research paradigms that shape social studies educational research and education. Four researchers from various contexts contextualize our experiences with and examples of participatory, anticolonial, and Indigenous research, offering guidance for scholars pursuing anticolonial relational scholarship and practice with Indigenous communities, teachers, and students.
