Play-Building for Pedagogical Purposes: Performing Person-Centered Care Concepts for Family Orientations and Staff Training

Abstract

This presentation is a collaboration between an urban hospital (organizational stakeholder), a faculty member of recreation and leisure studies, and a member of a drama department. They employed focus groups to generate data on the lived-experiences of family members and hospital staff of patients with dementia or traumatic brain injuries, ethnodrama (Saldaña, 2005), and playbuilding (Author, 2008 & 2018) to disseminate it theatrically. Leavy (2009) claims, “the use of arts-based presentational strategies brings academic scholarship to wider audiences” (p. 14). This partnership produced a 32-minute pedagogical performance to evoke dialogue about person-centered care (PCC) and collaboration across multiple disciplines. Performing the dramatizations live, this session demonstrates how research-based theatre “engages a whole range of human experiences, identities, and practices” (Call).
