Catalysts for Change: School Counselors Tackle Inequitable Educational Opportunity, Racial Injustice, and COVID-19

Abstract
As schools navigate the consequences of ongoing racial injustice and a pandemic that is disproportionately impacting Black, Brown and Indigenous communities, long standing systemic, structural and institutional educational inequities are exposed. Intentionality is required to uncover new counseling models that embrace diverse perspectives, call out racist policies and practices and increase support for historically alienated groups. Students and families are navigating this complex and rapidly changing world and need immediate support – their voices, which are often missing, must guide school counselor’s next steps. The papers in this symposium focus on school counselors who are leaders, and who are unafraid to play the roles of convener, catalyst, connector, and communicator to get people working together for change on behalf of students.
