Advocacy for Equitable Education in the 21st Century: Opportunities, Motivations, and Outcomes

Abstract

The session highlights emerging scholars in field of educational advocacy. The first paper examines the characteristics, defining issues, and knowledge development processes in social movements for public education in Sweden. It shows that Swedish activists organize around ideas of the welfare state and the quality of teachers’ working lives. The second paper examines how Asian American youth resisted White supremacy in Chicago high schools. It reveals that social media and Asian American and activism-based youth organizations facilitated students’ learning about context of anti-Asian racism, encouraged them to critique their schools’ responses, and mobilized some to exercise political agency. The third paper examines how teacher activists in Saskatchewan, Canada, enact educational advocacy to counter market-driven education policies that undermine public education.
