Abstract

Despite vocational competence representing the main goal of Vocational Education and Training, findings on the role of in-company training quality on competence development are limited. Therefore, we analyze the influence of training quality on trainee competence development, using longitudinal survey data with competence tests of 458 trainees at three points in time. The results indicate that training quality as a whole concept, rather than as isolated criteria, impacts competence development considerably. Explaining 43% of the variance, training quality seems more related to domain-linked than to domain-specific competence development (18%). Personal characteristics tend to affect trainees’ entrance level for competence more than competence development. The findings suggest that organizations should consider a broad range of quality criteria rather than selected aspects.
