An Evidence-Informed Framework for Holistic STEM Education

Abstract

Integrated STEM education has proliferated across education systems globally and can cultivate key transferrable skills for 21st century learning. However, discourses driving STEM education reform often perpetuate a neoliberal agenda, largely overlooking principles of ethics, sustainability, social responsibility, and action needed to support students in actualizing positive societal change. Responding to calls to understand effective integrated education, we advance an empirically informed framework for STEM education emphasizing well-being and sustainability. Drawing on interview and artifact data from 14 exemplary STEM educators, we identified three overarching themes that effective STEM education includes: Social Responsibility and Action; Embedded Assessment; and Integrated Pedagogy. The themes and codes articulate principles for STEM education which can cultivate transferrable skills students need to enact positive change.
